CJ Iftikhar Chaudhry Urges Government to Establish Election Commission

Chief Justice , Supreme Court of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry , during a hearing in supreme court, says that government will have to follow the constitution in running government affairs. He asked government to constitute election commission, without which the legitimacy of by elections can be challenged.

Earlier this week, Clarifying the misconception that judiciary is acting against the government , Chief Justice of Pakistan said that it is the constitution of Pakistan that defines this regulatory role of Supreme Court. He was addressing the National Judicial Conference. 


He said that a vibrant and active judiciary not only ensures a stronger nation but also a respectable position among the world nations.

Describing the constitutional role of each of the pillars of government , he said that though each institution is independent in in its functioning yet there are certain restrictions as well.
He said that the supremacy and rule of law is essential for both economic activity and economic progress.
The Chief Justice of Pakistan said the Constitution of a State determined the independence and autonomy of every organ of the State, yet subjected to certain limitations and restrictions, at the same time, ensured supremacy of the law, which was essential for economic development of a country.

He emphasized that the constitution necessitates essential freedoms for every individual citizen. Since with the growth in population , and with the growing awareness about rights , the litigation cases increase, therefore a more responsible and dedicated attitude is required from the judiciary.
